KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkwanazi is expected to take the stand on Tuesday, 07 October 2025 to address serious allegations he made during a July media briefing.
He will later be joined by the National Commissioner, Lieutenant General Fannie Masemola.
Mkwanazi will form part of the first batch of witnesses to give testimony on claims of political interference in police work and corruption in the justice system next week.
The committee chairperson Soviet Lekganyane confirmed on Friday, 03 October, that the committee is ready to meet with Mkwanazi and Masemola.
The committee was established following Mkhwanazi’s allegations and is tasked with investigating the veracity and implications of Mkhwanazi’s allegations relating to organs of state and criminal syndicates operating in South Africa.
“The committee is on track to begin the hearings with its first witness, Lt. Gen. Mkhwanazi, on Tuesday, 7 October, in Parliament. Later next week, the committee is expected to hear from the National Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Fannie Masemola.
“The committee is empowered by the National Assembly Rule 253 and was established following allegations made by Lt Gen Mkhwanazi.”
The election of Lekganyane as the chairperson has received criticism from opposition parties. They have voiced their unhappiness at having an African National Congress (ANC) member elected as the chairperson of the committee, saying this would not improve public trust in the committee’s processes.
In addition, committee member Mr Julius Malema said that the Economic Freedom Fighters, uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party and ActionSA are dissatisfied about the election of a chairperson from political parties comprising the Government of National Unity (GNU).
