The Premier League side, Manchester United has officially announced the departure of Ruben Amorim as Head Coach of the club with immediate effect on Monday, 05 January 2026.
The announcement of Amorim’s departure comes after Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Leeds United.
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change.
“This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish. The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future,” said the club in a statement.
The 40-year-old was appointed in November 2024, when he succeeded Erik ten Hag.
The club finished 15th at the end of Amorim’s first campaign and lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Europa League final, a defeat which meant they would not play any European football in 2025/26.
Man Utd have won eight and drawn seven of their first 20 matches in the Premier League this season. They were knocked out of the EFL Cup by League Two club Grimsby Town in the second round.

Signings:
In summer, the club signed three attacking players; Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers, Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford and Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig. They also brought in Diego Leon, a left-back from Paraguay, and new first-choice goalkeeper Senne Lammens, formerly of Royal Antwerp.
New Manager:
The club indicated that a former Man Utd and Scotland midfielder, Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday, 07 January 2026.
Fletcher has been in charge of the club’s Under-18s this season.
His twin sons, Jack and Tyler, are both in the first-team squad and were unused substitutes at Leeds on Sunday.
Fletcher is the club’s fifth interim boss who played for Man Utd under Sir Alex Ferguson, following Ryan Giggs, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Michael Carrick and Ruud van Nistelrooy.
