An important collaboration and partnership between the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT), City of Matlosana Community Services section and Marketing & Tourism section has benefitted the tourism sector and aspiring tourism learners of Kanana, Orkney and Klerksdorp.
In partnership with the DEDECT, the municipality’s Marketing and Tourism Unit carried out examinations at various tourism establishments, particularly guesthouses, in Kanana township and Orkney on Wednesday, 29 April 2026.
The Assistant Director: LED, Marketing & Tourism, Tebogo Ramone indicated that the inspections, which were conducted through the Thuntsa Lerole Service Delivery Programme, were aimed at assessing compliance, improving service standards, and supporting the growth and sustainability of local tourism businesses.

“As part of the programme, joint teams from DEDECT and the Municipality’s Marketing and Tourism Unit conducted inspections of five tourism establishments, particularly guesthouses, across key areas within Matlosana. Two of these establishments are located in Kanana, while three are based in Orkney.
“These engagements form part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the tourism sector, ensuring that local establishments are well-positioned to attract visitors and contribute meaningfully to the local economy,” said Ramone.
Meanwhile the municipality had a tourism-focused engagement at Matlhaleng Secondary School in Kanana, where learners, particularly those in Grades 10 and 12, were introduced to opportunities within the tourism sector.
Amongst other things, pupils were provided with valuable insights into tourism as a viable career path, highlighting opportunities in hospitality, travel, and related industries.
In the same week, the municipality hosted the “Hike, Chill & Braai” outdoor recreational event at Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve on Friday, 1 May 2026.
The event featured a 6km guided hiking experience, with participants arriving for registration between 07:00 and 08:00, and the hike commencing at 08:00. Community members were further encouraged to bring their own food and refreshments, creating a relaxed and family-friendly braai atmosphere within the scenic natural environment of the reserve.

According to the municipality, the event is their ongoing commitment to promote healthy lifestyles, encourage community social cohesion, and position local tourism assets as key drivers of economic development.
The Municipality highlighted that such programmes are aligned with broader Local Economic Development (LED) objectives, aimed at activating municipal tourism facilities, increasing visitor footfall, and supporting informal trading and small business opportunities linked to local events.
“The collaboration between Community Services and Marketing & Tourism demonstrates a coordinated municipal approach to service delivery, where recreation, environmental appreciation, and economic stimulation are integrated for maximum community benefit.
“Residents and visitors alike were encouraged to continue supporting similar initiatives hosted across Matlosana, as the Municipality continues to unlock the potential of its natural and recreational assets.”
