Metsimaholo is bracing for widespread disruptions as the Fezile Dabi Civic Movement (FDCM) officially filed a legal notice for a 30-day “Total Shutdown” protest. Slated to run from Tuesday, 23 June to Thursday, 23 July 2026, the mass action aims to force multi-billion-rand industrial giants to address historic socio-economic inequalities.
On Monday morning, FDCM administration submitted the formal notification to the Metsimaholo Local Municipality’s Department of Public Safety. The filing was executed under Section 3 of the Regulation of Gatherings Act.
Targeting Industrial Giants
The month-long demonstration is directed squarely at energy and chemical heavyweights Sasol and the National Petroleum Refiners of South Africa (NATREF). According to the FDCM, these organizations have historically extracted significant regional wealth while excluding locals from the surrounding communities.
Protesters are specifically demanding an end to systemic exclusion from:
- Local employment opportunities and sustainable job creation.
- Small business procurement and local economic development.
- Meaningful Corporate Social Investment (CSI) that directly upgrades township infrastructure.
Furthermore, the civic movement has cited severe environmental pollution and health hazards, arguing that the community continues to suffer from the brunt of industrial operations without reaping the economic benefits.
A Call for Economic Justice
FDCM leadership has drawn a firm line against corporate neglect, likening the current industry approach to deep-rooted exploitation.
“Today, we have successfully exercised our administrative right to pave the way for a lawful confrontation with corporate injustice,” said FDCM President HRH Tibisi April Motaung II in a statement.
“From 23 June to 23 July, our constitutional right to peaceful assembly will be fully deployed to correct decades of corporate neglect… The wealth of this region must, and will, benefit the people of this region.”
Motaung appealed to civil society, workers, and community members to unite for the cause.
Municipal authorities and local media expect further logistical updates detailing assembly points, approved protest routes, and safety protocols to be released in the coming days. Residents are advised to stay tuned for public announcements regarding travel disruptions and community participation.
