The National Commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), Makgothi Thobakgale, has concluded a massive, unannounced night-time search operation at the Klerksdorp Correctional Facility on Tuesday, 20 October 2026.
The surprise raid, which wrapped up on the evening of 20 October 2026, forms part of the Department’s aggressive nationwide crackdown to completely eradicate contraband and drastically reinforce security protocols within South Africa’s correctional facilities.
The high-intensity search successfully uncovered a shocking stash of illicit goods hidden away within the cells.
Wardens and security teams confiscated 20 cell phones, 37 SIM cards, 15 USB devices, and 3 cell phone batteries, exposing a sophisticated illicit communication network inside the prison walls.
In addition to electronic gadgets, officials seized dangerous weapons and major narcotics, including 40 packets of nyaope, 6 Mandrax tablets, one ball of dagga, 3 sharp objects, and a pair of scissors. In an unusual twist, the raid also turned up unauthorized electrical appliances and entertainment items, including three homemade speakers, a radio, and even a functional solar panel.
According to departmental authorities, this unannounced operation is a critical component of its broader strategy to actively disrupt the smuggling, possession, and distribution of prohibited items.

The DCS emphasized that the presence of such contraband directly undermines prison security, heavily compromises the day-to-day safety of both correctional officials and inmates, and severely obstructs any meaningful attempts at offender rehabilitation.
The Department has made a stern appeal to the broader community, reminding citizens that corrections is a collective societal responsibility.
Members of the public are cautioned under the strongest terms to refrain from supplying inmates with illegal goods or participating in syndicates that facilitate their entry, warning that anyone caught doing so will face immediate arrest and criminal prosecution.
Furthermore, the DCS issued a severe warning to its own rank and file, stating that any corrupt prison official found complicit in smuggling or supplying contraband will face harsh disciplinary action alongside immediate criminal charges.
“Members of the public are urged not to supply offenders with prohibited items or participate in activities that facilitate their entry into correctional facilities. Those found to be involved in such activities may face arrest and criminal prosecution.
“DCS officials are also warned against participating in the smuggling or supply of contraband. Any official found guilty of such misconduct will face appropriate disciplinary action and may also be subject to criminal prosecution.”
Moving forward, the department intends to intensify these randomized security sweeps to maintain secure environments and uphold the total integrity of the justice system.
