Taxi operators in the City of Matlosana Local Municipality have shut down main roads across the area of Klerksdorp, Stilfontein and Orkney on Monday, 23 March 2026.
The strike, which has severely disrupted traffic, schools, business, stems from poor road infrastructure, operating permits and illegal taxi opearators. The protest has affected roads like R503 connecting Hartbeesfontein/Tigane to Klerksdorp and the R30 at the opposite end going to Orkney and some internal roads.
Operators have expressed frustration over the state of roads in areas like Jouberton, which they claim damages their vehicles. City Report has also learnt that there are ongoing disputes regarding the issuance of operating licenses and the impounding of vehicles by traffic officials.
Meanwhile, the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management in the North West indicated that they are enganging operators who are protesting.
“Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Engagement with protesting operators is underway led by law enforcement and other relevant stakeholders.” This is a developing story.
