A Nigerian national, Michael Okoya appeared in the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 09 September 2025, facing charges of dealing in drugs.
This comes after Okoya was arrested by members of the North West Provincial Anti-Drug Team and Tactical Response Team (TRT) on Monday, 08 September 2025, in Klerksdorp.
The team confiscated drugs, including crystal meth, kat, and mandrax tablets, with an estimated value of over R1.5 million. The suspect was not found at his flat when the searched was conducted, and the police launched a manhunt.
The Hawks spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel, Tinyiko Mathebula indicated that the 51-year-old was arrested following a search and seizure operation, which took place at his flat in Klerksdorp on 02 September 2025 by members of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Crime Intelligence and Tactical Response Team (TRT).
“Members of the North West Provincial Anti-Drug Team and North West Tactical Response Team followed up on information, which led to the apprehension of the suspect. The suspect appeared in court and was remanded in custody.
“The acting North West Head, Brigadier Georgia Moos, and the Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, Dr Rachel Makhari, have commended the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation members and Organised Crime Component of the NPA for their relentless efforts in ensuring that the accused is brought to justice.”
His matter was postponed to 17 September 2025 for further investigation.
