The Northern Cape MEC for Transport Safety and Liaison, Limakatso Koloi has reminded the public that Transport Month was originally introduced as a call to action for society to use public transport, reduce congestion, and enhance road safety, on Wednesday, 15 October 2025.

During the official launch of Transport Month in Danielskuil, Koloi emphasised that as efforts continue to improve public transport, freight, and logistics systems, innovative solutions are required to address long-standing challenges.

The launch was attended by the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, accompanied by Deputy Provincial Commissioners for Policing, Major General Johny Besnaar; Crime Detection, Major General Luntu Ngubelanga; and Corporate Services, Major General Thabo Mphuthi.

Speaking at the launch, the Head of Department for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Mr Rodney Peters, highlighted that the launch provides an opportunity for government to reflect on transport-related challenges and identify ways to improve public transport and associated infrastructure.

Peters further encouraged municipalities to actively participate in the integrated transport planning process.

The Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola pledged SAPS’ continued support for road safety initiatives across the province, emphasizing the police’s commitment through ongoing roadblocks and vehicle check points.

Otola reiterated that during Operation Shanela 2 and the Inter-Provincial Cross-Border Operations, police actions will be intelligence-driven, targeting criminal activities across borders, including the transportation and movement of stolen vehicles and firearms, the trafficking of drugs, copper cables, stolen cattle, and undocumented persons, as well as the apprehension of wanted suspects
She further urged road users to exercise caution at all times and to refrain from drinking and driving.

“The SAPS remains committed to collaborating with the Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison, other law enforcement agencies, and stakeholders to ensure safer roads. Efforts to combat crime and promote road safety will continue to be intensified through joint operations and awareness campaigns.

“After the formal programme, law enforcement agencies conducted a static roadblock on the Danielskuil/ Kuruman road,” said Sergeant Merapelo Pilane.
