Motsoathebe in court for rape and murder of 6-year-old girl

Ogorogile Motsoathebe, who is linked to the alleged rape and murder of a six-year-old girl, was remanded in custody upon appearance in the Ganyesa Magistrates Court on Thursday, 31 July 2025.

The 26-year-old was arrested on Tuesday, 29 July 2025, in Tseoge village, Morokweng.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone confirmed that reports suggest that family members were travelling to Morokweng from Tseoge village on Saturday evening, 26 July 2025, when the girl’s mother alighted from a motor vehicle (van) and went to a nearby tavern and her daughter followed her.

“The mother came back alone after a few minutes and entered the vehicle, which drove off. She suddenly stopped the vehicle after realising that the child was missing. Although the car drove back to the tavern where the mother and other passengers searched for the child, that did not yield positive results.“

The local police were called on Sunday morning, 27 July 2025, to a residence after the girl’s half-naked body was found at the entrance of a pit latrine and a case of murder was opened,” said Mokgwabone.

Mokgwabone applauded his colleagues for their relentless efforts and dedication.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the North West, Major General Patrick Asaneng, welcomed the arrest of the accused and commended the police for their coordinated efforts and swift response that led to the breakthrough.

He indicated that the incident is a classic example of child neglect, which must be thoroughly investigated.

“This senseless, tragic and heart-breaking loss of a young child’s life who should have been safe with her mother and other adults who were with her in the van they were travelling with, is unfortunately yet another indication of the moral decay, barbarism and the endemic wickedness that afflict society all of which are due to the irresponsible and harmful consumption of liquor.”

He will reappear on Monday, 04 August 2025, for bail application. Investigations into the matter continue.
