Media reports claims that the Madlanga Commission Chief Evidence Leader, Advocate Terry Motau informed the commission’s head, Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga that he plans to step down.
It is still unclear whether Motau has been threatened in relation to his role as chief evidence leader of the commission.
Asked about his reasons for leaving the commission, Motau said it was premature to discuss the details and that nothing had been finalized.
He refused to entertain speculations about the reasons behind his potential departure and asked for patience until the full facts are available next week.
The inquiry is investigating claims of political interference in police work and corruption in the justice system.
The commission is expected to take an impartial approach to all the evidence that will be presented at the Commission.
The establishment of the commission comes after the allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi at the 6 July media briefing.
The commission’s hearings began in mid-September 2025. An interim report is due to President Cyril Ramaphosa within three months of the terms of reference being gazetted in July 2025.
The proceedings began with the evidence of Lt Gen Mkhwanazi.
