“Ladies and gentlemen, let us engage openly, strategically, and constructively as we work together to shape the future of our City,” said Kgang.

The municipality is pushing forward with a renewed focus on Local Economic Development (LED), aiming to build sustainable economic opportunities across all communities. Presenting the LED strategic priorities, Acting Director of LED, Dr Keaobaka Boikanyo, emphasised the critical importance of collaborative efforts.

According to Dr Boikanyo, unlocking long-term growth and prosperity requires bridging the gap between government and private entities.

He highlighted that the municipality will actively strive to create opportunities by forming robust partnerships with private investors, local mining houses, financial institutions, and key development partners.

Dr Boikanyo focused on five priorities, namely Investment Attraction & Economic Growth, Energy & Industrial Development, SMME & Township Economy Development, Tourism, Heritage & Events Economy, Partnerships, Infrastructure & Revenue Enhancement.

Sharing the same sentiments, Tebogo Ramone, the Assistant Director of Local Economic Development (LED), presented a portfolio of “bankable” investment projects designed to drive public-private financing in the city. Ramone emphasised that key local landmarks—including the PC Pelser Airport, Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve, Goudkoppie Heritage Hills, and Markotter Stadium—are primed to attract private capital and stimulate economic growth. Additional sites earmarked for development include the Fresh Produce Market, Lion Lodge, Matlosana Golf Club, and James Motlatsi Stadium (previously known as Oppenheimer Stadium).

“The City of Matlosana remains dedicated to building strong partnerships with investors and creating an enabling environment that supports economic growth, innovation, competitiveness, and sustainable development,” said Ramone.

Delivering the keynote address, the Executive Mayor Fikile Mahlophe indicated that the municipality is aggressively repositioning itself as a premier economic hub along the N12 Development Corridor, leveraging a diverse portfolio of mining, renewable energy, and agro-processing investments to drive regional growth and spatial integration.

“We are particularly excited about the significant investment opportunities currently unfolding within our Municipality, especially in the renewable energy sector through projects such as solar and battery storage developments. These investments represent not only infrastructure growth, but also opportunities for skills development, procurement participation, enterprise development, and local job creation.

“As leadership, we believe that government alone cannot address all challenges without meaningful collaboration with business, investors, and community stakeholders. We therefore appreciate the stakeholders who continue to partner with the Municipality in driving development and restoring confidence within our City,” Mahlophe said.

In a major bid to reclaim the city center from rising crime,Mahlophe has announced a strategic partnership with Harmony Gold Mine to resuscitate local surveillance operations. The security initiative, valued at approximately R1.8 million for its initial phase, will directly target identified crime hotspots within the Klerksdorp CBD.

According toMahlophe, this public-private collaboration with Harmony Gold Mine is a critical step in preserving local businesses and boosting economic investment in the region.

“One of these important partnerships is with Harmony Gold Mine, which has come on board to support the resuscitation of the Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) camera project within the Klerksdorp CBD. This project, valued at approximately R1.8 million for the first phase, will be implemented jointly with Harmony as a strategic sponsor.”

“The project will include the refurbishment of the control room to be located at the Klerksdorp Fire Station, as well as the installation of CCTV cameras at identified critical hotspots within the CBD. The implementation is expected to take place over two to three phases between 2026 and 2028 under the leadership of the Acting Director: Local Economic Development, Dr K.I.D. Boikanyo.

“As the Municipality, we further recognise local businesses as our first investors before we seek investment opportunities outside Matlosana. It is therefore important that we continue strengthening relations with our local business sector and create platforms for continuous engagement,” said Mahlophe.
