City of Matlosana member of the mayoral committee (MMC) for Local Economic Development (LED) Wesley Kgang has apologised after a video went viral showing him resisting and shouting at the North West Traffic Police officers, “I will never be arrested by traffic cops.”
“I wish to state that I have noted the video that has went viral and widely shared on various media platforms. Which has caused great concern rightly so given the fact that I am a public representative. Circumstances and facts surrounding the incident was ventilated in a competent court of law today the 26th January 2026. Further details and update on the matter will be shared in due course.
“I wish to unreservedly apologise to the community of Matlosana, my family and my organisation for the unfortunate occurrence,” said Kgang.
The North West police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Sam Tselanyane alleged that on Saturday, 24 January 2026 at about 06:30, traffic officials were busy with routine patrols when they spotted a black sedan vehicle in Leask street, Klerksdorp driving while facing the oncoming traffic.
“The female traffic official stopped and approached the driver who appeared to be under the influence of liquor.
“Furthermore, upon interviewing the suspect for his actions and informed of his arrest by the officials, he became aggressive and started to attack the female officials, it was then that male officials then tried to intervene and resistance escalated up until SAPS ware called and suspect was restrained. In due process the female official sustained an injury on her left hand,” said Tselanyane.
A source within the municipality alleged that Kgang was trapped by his own comrades after having disagreements with the executive mayor Fikile Mahlophe.
Pretoria Flying News reported that the incident was a perfectly orchestrated plan for his downfall by the other faction within the municipality.
“Traffic officials of the municipality were deployed to settle political scores. They were used and positioned to arrest Wesley for offences we can state with confidence he did not commit. He assaulted no one. He damaged no property.”
City Report sent questions to Mahlophe in an attempt to get his views on the matter, but that attempt was unsuccessful.
While addressing the media outside of the Klerksdorp traffic court, the 36-year-old indicated that he was not driving a black sedan on Saturday, 24 January 2026.
Kgang appeared before the Klerksdorp Traffic Court on Monday, 26 January 2026, facing charges of drunken driving. He was arrested on Saturday, 24 January and released on a R1000 bail on Sunday, 25 January 2026.
Speaking about other charges that were reported on the media, Kgang confirmed that the court did not engage him about charges of assault on a traffic official and malicious damage to property.
“I further wish to categorically state that I will fully cooperate with the law enforcement agencies and the justice system to establish the facts surrounding the incident. No one is above the law including myself as a public representative hence my willingness to fully cooperate and abide with the legal processes that will be ensuing pertaining this matter.
“I am a mere human-being like anyone else with fallibility which I take full responsibility for and commit to do better in my conduct henceforth.”
