Matlosana council tables report on mayor R2.4 million spending spree

City of Matlosana Local Municipality council is expected to table a report that speaks about allegations of maladministration against the Executive Mayor Fikile Mahlophe on Friday, 30 January 2026.

Mahlophe has faced significant allegations regarding unauthorized expenditure, including R700,000 for mayoral residence renovations to remove a predecessor’s “smell” and R280,000 for a boardroom table.

The council is scheduled for its 1st Ordinary Council Meeting of 2026 on Friday, 30 January 2026 at 10:00, Recreation Centre.

Amongst other critical documents, the council is also expected to focus on annual reports, performance reports, and audit findings in line with Local Government: Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) requirements.

According to sources within the municipality, the ad hoc committee submitted the original report to council on 26 June 2025.

The follow-up report was handed to the Speaker of Council Stella Mondlane-Ngwenya on 22 July 2025 for inclusion in a Special Council Meeting held on 23 July 2025.

Responding to questions sent to him, the Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor Lourens Cromhout indicated that the report was not included, neither on remaining meetings for 2025.

“The answer of the investigation of the allegations of serious misconduct, is in the report handed to the Speaker of Council, as we haven’t seen the report, I cannot speculate on the content of the report. The Speaker of Council needs to include it in a Council agenda in order to present it to Council.

“The DA is always serious to address any misconduct allegations, including corruption and the misappropriation of public funds. I will follow up on the report.”

It is alleged that the committee found that Mahlophe contravened the Section 11 of the Code of Conduct for Councillors. The report stated he could not be exonerated from the purchase of the new table and chairs, as he had instructed the removal of a perfectly good existing table.

“The committee recommended that the council take disciplinary action against Mahlophe and other implicated officials for violating the code of conduct and bypassing supply chain processes.

The DA and other parties within the council has accused the ANC-led majority of shielding the Mahlophe from accountability and ignoring the serious allegations.

“The report has been delayed to cover the executive mayor. The ANC councillors are playing politics of chess”

In 2025, Mahlophe’s office issued a statement denying the allegations, calling them “not factual and misleading” and part of a ploy to tarnish his image.

The Mayor’s office stated no payment of R280,000 was made for a boardroom table and claimed the residence refurbishment was below R600,000 and within budgetary allocations.

City Report tried to get a comment from the office of Mahlophe but that attempt was unsuccessful.

This is a developing story.
