MEC Motsumi restores Rauwane Sepeng classrooms burnt by fire

In an effort to restore burnt classrooms at Rauwane Sepeng Secondary School in Tlhabane
Rustenburg Local Municipality, the Department of Education MEC Viola Motsumi took a
decisive action to appoint a contractor for renovations.

Motsumi said this is an ongoing strategy by the department to improve school infrastructure,
strengthen maintenance, and reduce reliance on temporary structures

The department is expected to spend the amount of 10 million rand for the renovations.

The appointment comes after fire damaged a block of Grade 12 classrooms consisting of six
classes at Rauwane Secondary School on Monday 04 November 2024.

On the day of the tragic incident, all learners and staff were evacuated safely. No injuries have
been reported as all learners and staff were able to evacuate the premises safely.

According to the departmental spokesperson, Vuyo Mantshule, preliminary reports indicated that
there were some electrical faults detected that led to the incident.

“Motsumi acknowledged that there are still some schools that have challenges of infrastructure;
and she vowed that the programme of handing over contractors for renovations will be rolled out
to even more schools that were damaged by storms.

“She further indicated that the process of building extra two class of mortar in an effort of
eradicating mobile classrooms is going on,” said Mantshule.

“We will not stop at Rauwane Sepeng. We are rolling out a broader programme to hand over
contractors to schools in need of renovation, including facilities damaged by storms. We are also

building two additional mortar classrooms where needed to eliminate reliance on mobile
classrooms,” says Motsumi.
