Pirates confirm agreement for Mofokeng transfer to Union SG

JOHANNESBURG — Orlando Pirates have officially confirmed that they have reached an agreement with Belgian Pro League outfit Royale Union Saint-Gilloise for the transfer of teenage sensation Relebohile Mofokeng.

While the club-to-club negotiations regarding the transfer fee and deal structure are complete, the move is not yet fully finalized. The transfer remains subject to Mofokeng successfully passing his medical examination and agreeing on personal terms with the Belgian side.

In a surprising revelation, Orlando Pirates disclosed that the agreement in principle with Union SG was actually secured before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Both clubs made a strategic, joint decision to delay the public announcement. The leadership felt it was crucial for the young forward to focus entirely on his international duties with Bafana Bafana.

By withholding the news, they protected the player from the distractions of transfer speculation and allowed South Africa’s historic World Cup campaign to remain the sole focus of the nation.

The Buccaneers have stated that they will make no further comments on the matter until Mofokeng and Royale Union Saint-Gilloise have completely concluded the remaining paperwork and medical protocols.

Mofokeng’s move to Europe marks another massive milestone for South African football, capitalizing on the immense global spotlight generated by the national team’s recent performances on the world stage.

“There are players you watch. And then there are players you feel. From the very first time Relebohile Mofokeng stepped onto a training pitch at Rand Stadium, nobody needed to explain which category he belonged to.

“The senior players already knew. You could see it in the way they paused. The way they turned to each other with that look – the one that needs no words and simply watched. A teenager, fresh from being scouted from the Pirates Cup.”

“That is where this story begins. Not in a final. Not in a sold-out Orlando Amstel Arena full of noise. It begins in a quiet training session in 2022, where a boy showed a group of experienced footballers something they had not seen in a very long time. Something that reminded them why they fell in love with this game in the first place.”
