KIMBERLEY – A coordinated law enforcement effort in the Northern Cape has disrupted a cross-province vehicle theft pipeline on Thursday, 23 July 2026.
The vigilance and swift response of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Upington K9 Unit and Border Policing led to the recovery of a luxury 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado valued at approximately R1.5 million and the arrest of a 27-year-old suspect.
The high-value SUV had been reported stolen in Woodstock, Cape Town, where a criminal case for the theft of a motor vehicle was opened approximately 12 hours prior to the interception. The tracking timeline indicates the vehicle was driven nearly 800 kilometres across provincial borders before it was stopped.
The breakthrough occurred on Thursday, 23 July 2026, at approximately 07:30, after the dedicated SAPS operational teams in Upington received real-time intelligence from a private vehicle tracking company.
The tracking signals pinpointed the exact location of the moving vehicle near the Upington Central Business District (CBD).
Acting on the live coordinates, the K9 Unit and Border Policing teams staged a tactical interception within the CBD.
The suspect was successfully boxed in, the stolen luxury vehicle was recovered intact, and the 27-year-old driver was immediately taken into police custody.
The District Commissioner of the ZF Mgcawu District, Major General Monica Sebili, highly praised the operational success.
She commended the responding officers for their high level of professionalism, agility, and absolute commitment to fighting trio crimes in the region.

The 27-year-old suspect is expected to make an initial appearance in the Upington Magistrate’s Court shortly.
He faces a formal charge of possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.
