POTCHEFSTROOM – A woman’s sharp reflexes and quick thinking turned her from a victim into a hero, leading to the dramatic arrest of three suspects who allegedly robbed her at gunpoint after offering her a lift.
The incident unfolded on Wednesday afternoon, 12 August 2026, at approximately 15:20. The victim was hitchhiking from Wolmaransstad to Vryburg when she accepted a ride from the occupants of a white Volkswagen Polo.
According to the North West police spokesperson, Colonel Anne Makgakoe, the journey took a terrifying turn just three kilometres outside Wolmaransstad along the Wolmaransstad/Schweizer-Reneke Road.
The driver pulled out what appeared to be a firearm, pointing it directly at the woman while demanding her cash and personal belongings. After handing over her items, she was forced out of the car and abandoned in an isolated area.
Unbeknownst to her attackers, the victim had successfully hidden her cellphone during the ordeal. Immediately after being dropped off, she used her phone to photograph the fleeing getaway vehicle.
The image was rapidly circulated through local community safety groups, prompting an immediate lookout notice. South African Police Service (SAPS) members responded swiftly to tips from the community.
Thanks to this coordinated effort, two men and a woman, aged between 26 and 39, were tracked down and arrested in Makwassie. Police also recovered all of the victim’s stolen property. Following the arrests, preliminary investigations revealed that the weapon used in the attack was actually an imitation firearm.
Consequently, the suspects face an additional charge under the Firearms Control Act. The investigation took a further turn when detectives linked the owner of the Volkswagen Polo to an older crime scene. The vehicle has been tied to a business robbery that took place a few days prior, on Sunday, 9 August 2026, along the Broadbent N12 in Wolmaransstad.
The three suspects made their first appearance before the Wolmaransstad Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 14 August 2026. They face multiple charges, including armed robbery, possession of an imitation firearm, and business robbery.
The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Arthur Adams, highly commended the victim’s bravery and decisive action.
“The quick-thinking victim turned out to be the hero in her own traumatic incident,” Lieutenant General Adams stated. “Her heroic efforts are sincerely appreciated and were of great help to the SAPS.”
