KLERKSDORP – The African National Congress (ANC) is expected to announce the current Council Speaker of the City of Matlosana Local Municipality, Stella Mondlane-Ngwenya, as the party’s official Mayoral Candidate for Matlosana today, Saturday, 22 August 2026.
Highly placed sources within the ANC national leadership have confirmed to City Report that the party has decided to drop the incumbent Executive Mayor, Fikile Mahlophe, ahead of the upcoming Local Government Elections (LGE). This strategic shift marks a massive shake-up in the region’s political landscape as the ruling party finalises its candidate lists.
Meanwhile, intense debates are unfolding in the neighbouring JB Marks Local Municipality regarding its future leadership. The current Executive Mayor and Regional Chairperson Gaba Thithiba Ka Qhele holds a strong advantage and is heavily favoured by the national leadership to return as the mayoral candidate.
Contenders within the party are still pushing hard for Ntombi Koloti’s name to be announced for the top post instead.
“We have decided to choose Gaba as the suitable candidate,” a national ANC source revealed to City Report on the condition of anonymity.
The official announcement from the ANC is expected later today, legalising a new political chapter for both Dr Kenneth Kaunda District municipalities.
