JOHANNESBURG — Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies Head Coach Godfrey Sapula has issued a clear rallying cry to his squad, demanding absolute focus, discipline, and humility ahead of their CAF Women’s Champions League zonal qualifiers from 20 to 29 August in Botswana.
The two-time continental champions have been drawn into a competitive Group B for the upcoming COSAFA Women’s Champions League Qualifiers in Botswana.
The Brazilians will battle it out against Eswatini’s Nsingizini Hotspurs FC, Mozambique’s Costa do Sol, and Malawi’s Silver Strikers, with only the top two sides booking a spot in the semi-finals.
Despite boasting the most formidable pedigree in African women’s club football, Sapula is refusing to let complacency creep into his star-studded camp.
“My immediate reaction was one of respect for all the teams in our group,” Sapula stated. “At this level, there are no easy games and every opponent deserves our full respect. We know that each match will bring its own challenges, so our approach is to take each game as it comes, prepare thoroughly and give our best in every match.”
The Hollywoodbets Super League champions head across the border in devastating domestic form. Sundowns Ladies have enjoyed a flawless start to their local title defence, winning all five of their opening league fixtures. Even more terrifying for their opponents, they have hammered in 21 goals while maintaining a perfect clean-sheet record.
While acknowledging the superb domestic run, Sapula warned his players that continental football is an entirely different beast.
“It is encouraging to have started the league strongly and we are pleased with the team’s performances,” the tactician added. “The results give us confidence, but we also recognize that continental football presents a different challenge. We cannot rely only on what we have achieved so far.”
With a ticket to the main CAF Women’s Champions League tournament on the line, the mandate for the Pretoria-based giants is clear: translate domestic dominance into regional success, without taking a single minute for granted.
“We have to remain focused, continue working hard and improve with every game. We will take the positives from our league campaign and carry that confidence into Botswana while remaining focused on our mission,” Sapula concluded.
The regional showpiece in Gaborone presents an immediate tactical challenge for the technical team, as opponents often deploy deeply defensive structures when facing the Pretoria-based giants. To counteract this, Sapula’s training blocks have reportedly prioritised high-tempo transition play and clinical execution in the final third. The technical team is fully aware that breaking down stubborn defensive blocks will require both patience and physical durability over the ten-day tournament structure.
Crucial to this campaign will be the integration of emerging young talents alongside the club’s experienced core. Managing player fatigue and squad rotation is expected to take centre stage as the Brazilians navigate a dense fixture schedule in the intense Botswana heat. By blending seasoned international campaigners with hungry academy graduates, the technical bench aims to maintain tactical consistency without compromising the high-pressing intensity that defines the club’s identity.
Beyond tactical preparation, the stakes in Botswana extend far past regional bragging rights. Securing the COSAFA crown serves as the sole direct qualifying route to the CAF Women’s Champions League, a stage where the club aims to redeem their status at the absolute pinnacle of African club football. The journey beginning in Gaborone is not merely a regional title defence, but the critical first step in a broader mission to re-establish continental dominance.
“To the Yellow Nation, thank you for your continued support. We know that whenever we play, we carry your hopes and pride with us, and we do not take that responsibility lightly. We are going to Botswana to represent the Mamelodi Sundowns badge with passion, humility and honour.”
