Kaizer Chiefs and Durban City Friday match will remind football supporters of 1979, where Chiefs claimed a 2-1 victory in their first ever meeting in May of that year, away from home, courtesy of goals from Abednigo ‘Shaka’ Ngcobo and Nelson ‘Teenage’ Dladla scored for Chiefs.
It was a moment from another football generation, yet a reminder that the Club’s story is built on moments like these that include, firsts, renewals, and statements of intent.
The two will face each other on Friday, 31 October 2025 at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Chiefs indicated that the match will not just be another league fixture. It will mark a quiet but significant milestone.
“The meeting with their opponents carries layers of significance that stretch from the past to the present. For the first time in decades, two names once intertwined in the annals South African football will share the same stage again, even if the connection is purely historical.
“For Chiefs, this match carries weight beyond nostalgia. Durban has become a city of turning points for Amakhosi this year. Their Nedbank Cup triumph in eThekwini remains a defining moment, followed by the successful hosting of the Toyota Cup against Ghana’s Asante Kotoko. The recent league victory over Golden Arrows suggested that the Glamour Boys were starting to rediscover the rhythm that defines title-winning teams,” said the club in a media statement.
The club has also said as they return to the east coast, the focus is on consistency with discipline and sharpness needed to turn performances into a pattern of results.
“Last Sunday’s CAF Confederation Cup victory in Dobsonville against AS Simba of the DRC showed resolve and character. Carrying that momentum onto the domestic front will reassure its supporters that this side is determined to succeed at every opportunity.
“Durban has given the Soweto giants joy this year and now it offers another chance for affirmation. Tonight’s fixture, then, is not just about a return to Durban or a nod to history; it’s about how Chiefs take such moments and turn them into flashes of progress to become a consistent winning team.”
Sounding confident, Bafana Bafana and Chiefs attacker, Mduduzi Shabalala said Amakhosi’s impressive form in CAF competition is the perfect motivation for the team to take into their Betway Premiership encounter against Durban City.
“It was a great confidence booster for us to score three goals and we will take that into the match against Durban City,” said Shabalala.
