SAPS intercept R2m illicit cigarette shipment on N12

KLERKSDORP – A major blow has been dealt to organized criminal networks in the North West after the Public Order Policing (POP) Unit and the Potchefstroom Flying Squad intercepted a massive shipment of contraband cigarettes worth over R2 million on Monday morning, July 27, 2026 near the City of Matlosana.

Acting on strategic intelligence, law enforcement officials cornered and stopped a suspicious two-ton truck traveling along the N12 highway.

A thorough search of the vehicle exposed dozens of master boxes filled with illicit cigarettes hidden inside the cargo area. Police immediately seized the contraband goods and confiscated the truck used to transport them.

Two men, aged 39 and 41, who were operating as the driver and crew member, were arrested on the scene.

Both individuals are suspected to be undocumented foreign nationals. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has formally engaged the Department of Home Affairs to verify their legal immigration status.

The suspects remain in police custody and are scheduled to make their first appearance before the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, July 29, 2026. They face criminal charges related to the illegal possession of illicit cigarettes.

North West Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, highly commended the operational teams for their sharpness and professionalism.

“The successful seizure demonstrates SAPS’ unwavering commitment to combating the illicit trade, which undermines the country’s economy and fuels organised crime,” Major General Naidoo stated. He warned syndicates that police will continue to aggressively disrupt unlawful supply chains, adding, “the long arm of the law will catch up with them.”
