Klerksdorp community leader, philanthropist and public figure Moemedi Matsepe, popularly known as “Pika_the_Monk,” has been honoured with the prestigious Community Sports Developer Award at the Northwest Sports Awards hosted by the Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation.
The award was presented by the MEC for Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation, Tsotso Virginia Tlhapi, in recognition of Moemedi Matsepe’s exceptional contribution to community development, youth empowerment and the advancement of sport across the Northwest Province.
For many years, Matsepe has dedicated his life to creating opportunities for young people through sport, education and community upliftment. He is the founder and organiser of the annual Kasi World Cup, one of the province’s most respected community football tournaments.
The tournament attracts thousands of spectators and has become a recognised platform where scouts from professional and higher league clubs identify talented young footballers, opening doors for many to pursue professional careers.
In addition to the Kasi World Cup, Matsepe hosts an annual Memorial Tournament in remembrance of the young people of Klerksdorp who have passed away. The event brings communities together in unity, remembrance and hope while promoting peace through sport.
His commitment to community development extends beyond football. Every year he organises Clap and Tap Gospel Competitions, providing a platform for spiritual growth, musical talent and positive youth participation.
Through his philanthropic initiatives, Matsepe regularly gives back to vulnerable members of the community by donating food hampers, toiletries, sanitary towels and sporting equipment, including soccer balls, soccer kits and soccer boots to emerging teams competing in local leagues. These efforts help ensure that young people, regardless of their circumstances, have access to opportunities that can change their lives.
Beyond his community projects, Matsepe is also a sought-after motivational speaker, delivering inspirational talks at schools, colleges and community programmes. His messages encourage young people to pursue education, develop discipline, make positive life choices and believe in their potential to become future leaders.
