The Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM) has strongly condemned the escalating violence and lack of ethical decency surrounding recent Spring Day water-splashing traditions, following a fatal stabbing in Gauteng and widespread reports of public chaos.
The civic organization’s outcry follows the appearance of a 53-year-old man in the Cullinan Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 03 September 2026.
The suspect is facing charges for the alleged fatal stabbing of 21-year-old Tshepang Nyathi in Refilwe. The tragedy reportedly stemmed from a violent retaliation after a water-splashing incident.
MRM North West Provincial Convenor, Pastor Lesiba Kgwele, expressed deep concern over how the September 1st celebrations have deteriorated, blaming the pursuit of social media clout for driving behaviors to extreme and dangerous levels.
“The extent to which this year’s celebrations were taken to extreme levels, due in part to the desire for viral social media attraction, has sharply raised the need to educate our communities about water scarcity, as well as respect for the rights of others not to participate in such activities,” Pastor Kgwele stated.
According to the MRM, this year’s incidents highlighted a severe collapse in the country’s moral fiber. Pastor Kgwele detailed a series of unruly acts committed by mobs of youths, describing their behavior toward the elderly as “demonic, dehumanizing, and indecent.”
The chaos was not limited to neighborhoods. Youths targeted public and private transport, bringing traffic to a standstill and jeopardizing commuter safety. The movement noted that crossing these intergenerational boundaries directly undermines the core African philosophy of Ubuntu, human dignity, and the rule of law.
The behavior has also penetrated learning institutions, where students have been seen splashing water on their educators. The MRM warned that targeting teachers severely compromises classroom discipline and destroys the fundamental respect required for a harmonious learning environment.
To prevent future tragedies, the MRM is calling for the immediate implementation of a nationwide public awareness campaign. Pastor Kgwele suggested mirroring the intensive safety campaigns used for fireworks during the festive season.
The organization believes that aggressive public education ahead of September 1st is the only way to curb bullying, protect basic human rights, and prevent potential violence.
“We must promote peaceful co-existence and enhance community values,” Kgwele emphasized, urging society to restore ethical decency and ensure the safety of all citizens during public holidays.
“Public safety authorities, crime prevention structures in our communities and schools must redouble their effort to warn citizens and leaners against splashing water at motorists as well as other non-participant passer byes as such provocative and disruptive acts could result in violent acts and unnecessary loss of lives as well as road accidents for which instigators would be held accountable, “he underscored.
